Maureen George, PhD, RN, AE-C, FAAN Columbia University School of Nursing, USA
Maureen George, PhD, RN, AE-C, FAAN is an Associate Professor of Nursing at Columbia University School of Nursing. Dr. George has worked as an advance practice nurse in lung disease since 1986 and as certified asthma educator since 2002. She is a newly appointed member of the United Nations Environmental Program’s Medical Technical Options Committee, an advisory committee which examines the contribution of metered-dose inhalers and other medical aerosols as it relates to Article 6 of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.
Dr. George recently completed a 5 year NIH grant in which she examined patient-primary care provider communication regarding preferences for asthma self-management in a vulnerable adult population. She currently has NIH funding to conduct a feasibility trial using primary care providers to deliver a shared decision-making brief intervention using motivational interviewing with adults with uncontrolled asthma.
Dr. George's program of research focuses broadly on reducing health inequities in vulnerable populations with chronic respiratory disease. Particular areas of interest include community-based participatory research (CBPR) with poor and minority patients and their health care providers to understand how decision-making influences treatment choices (adherence). To the end, she uses community-informed strategies to address obstacles to disease control, such as health beliefs, health literacy, and the built environment.
She lectures extensively on issues related to asthma and allergies and has published original research and peer-reviewed manuscripts in these areas.
