Prof Karis Cheng is a Professor of the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore and National University Hospital System, Singapore. She is an Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Health and Social Care at the University of Hull in United Kingdom. Prof Cheng’s research inspiration came from her hematopoietic stem cell transplant training at Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center in the United States in 1994. Her research interests include epidemiology, experience, and clinical management of physical and psychological symptoms of patients with cancer, as well as quality of life, supportive and transitional care of patients with cancer or chronic conditions. Prof Cheng has expertise in a range of research methodologies. And she has successfully completed a number of multi-disciplinary and international research studies, and published extensively in major international oncology journals on symptom experience and management, quality of life, and survivorship care. Highlights of her works include the pioneer paper on the oral care of pediatric patients receiving cancer therapy (European Journal of Cancer), the pioneer paper on the experience of pediatric cancer patients with mucositis (Supportive Care in Cancer), and the pioneer instrument on the mucositis-specific quality of life measurement of adult patients treated with different types of cancer therapy (Cancer). Her excellence in education has been recognized by the awards of the eleven Best Teaching Awards and the Master Teaching Award in 2004 – 2009 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Currently, Prof Cheng is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Qualitative Methodology, and is serving on various editorial/advisory boards of the international journals including the European Journal of Oncology Nursing. Prof Cheng is active in various academic and professional associations and international organizations. She has served as the Vice-Chair of the Mucositis Study Group of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer, leader of the Nursing and Allied Health Interest Group of the International Society of Geriatric Oncology, and ex-Board of Director of the International Society of Oral Oncology. Prof Cheng currently is the convener of the East Asian Forum for Nursing Scholar with graduate school memberships covering seven major East Asian and Asian countries.
