How should curriculum be chosen?

June 16, 2015

Los Angeles, CA - Does curriculum really matter? Who gets to decide what students are taught? Should the government get involved? How about the parents? Or the students themselves? And what other issues should be considered when curriculum decisions are made? Bringing clarity to the debate is The SAGE Guide to Curriculum in Education, which explores the interdependence and interconnectedness of the four commonplaces of curriculum: subject matter, teachers, learners, and milieu.

Illuminating curriculum’s ideas, issues, perspectives, and possibilities by tracing the complex traditions of curriculum scholarship, this new resource also strives to highlight and explain how subject matter, teachers, learners, and environment each need to be considered when the local and state school boards and government agencies, educational institutions, and curriculum stakeholders at all levels make the curriculum decisions. Readers will peruse the 55 topical chapters, all written by distinguished scholars and organized within these four key themes:

  • Part I – Subject Matter as Curriculum
  • Part II – Teachers as Curriculum
  • Part III – Students as Curriculum
  • Part IV – Milieu as Curriculum

The SAGE Guide to Curriculum in Education focuses on contemporary concerns in education and provides student with more depth than what is found in an encyclopedia entry. It also provides References and Further Readings for those wishing to explore the topic in greater detail. All libraries serving those interested in curriculum should have this resource on their shelves. A FREE 30-day online trial of SAGE Knowledge, including The SAGE Guide to Curriculum in Education, is available at www.sagepub.com/freetrial.
