Dr Chijioke Obasi is Head of Research and External Engagement for the Division of Psychology & Social Work at the University of the West of Scotland.Dr Chijioke Obasi has an academic career spanning nearly 20 years, the majority of which has been in relation to equality, diversity and inclusion; either leading programmes or leading on EDI practice in academic settings. Teaching research has been a key part of her learning and teaching contribution both at postgraduate and undergraduate levels. Chijioke's PhD research is in the area of workplace issues of equality and inclusion with specific focus on the experience of Black women and culturally Deaf women who use sign language. Chijioke has a professional background as a social worker and is also a qualified sign language interpreter.
Chijioke is an experienced researcher and has key publications in the areas of race, gender and disability. Identity, intersectionality and researcher positionality form a key focus in many of her publications. Chijoke has made significant contribution to insider/outsider debates including participant perspectives on these issues. She has introduced the theoretical framework of ‘Africanist Sista-hood in Britain’ as a useful theoretical framework for analysis for research with black women and other minoritised groups in the UK. Chijioke is also the Principal Investigator for the ESRC funded research project “Unmasking Educational Inequalities: The impact of Covid-19 on deaf students in higher education.
