R.A. Dello Buono Manhattan College, USA and Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas, Mexico

R.A. Dello Buono is a critical sociologist in the tradition of C. Wright Mills, who views social science as one useful tool among others for human liberation. For over 35 years, his research has contemplated big social problems including war, imperialism, racism, gender-based oppression, poverty, migratory displacement, social and economic development, and others. Much of his empirical work has focused on the Latin America and the Caribbean. He has researched and lectured extensively in Nicaragua, Guatemala, Panama, Colombia, Cuba, Argentina, and Mexico. His theoretical interests center on social problems and development paradigms, and has been particularly critical of North American brands of social constructionism for their trademark disconnect with political economy. This informed the theme of his presidential address to the 2013 annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP), a scholar-activist organization in which Dello Buono has served in various capacities over the last three decades. He is currently also the editor of the Brill's Critical Global Studies book series, and advisory editor for several journals including Social Problems.
