About the Author

"There is a lack of quality qualitative texts specifically tailored for public health and I think this text could fill that gap. The emphasis on global health is a very attractive feature for this book as it would lend itself to a wide variety of professionals and students. The “start to finish” overview that the book attempts is very accessible for students who are just learning about how to go about conducting qualitative research."

Michael Reece
Indiana University-Bloomington

"…the data collection and analysis are all in one text, the examples given are great, and it provides a chapter on mixed-methods research which would be a natural segue into talking about quantitative data collection and analysis."

Stephanie B. Jilcott
East Carolina University

"The three greatest strengths are the breadth of topics covered, the connection between classroom teaching and real world practical experience and classroom exercises, resources, practical examples – offering lots of opportunities to practice what is learned in the classroom."

Rosemary M. Caron
University of New Hampshire

"Those of us who teach and use qualitative methods have been waiting for
a book like this for a long time. Deborah Padgett successfully conveys
the reasons for using qualitative methods, epistemological orientations,
methodological traditions, and the nuts and bolt of how to do and report
rigorous and relevant qualitative and mixed methods research. This
well-balanced book is the perfect fit for those of us who teach and
conduct applied health research."

Geoffrey Nelson, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology

This is a suitable text for Postgraduate and PhD students. It covers not only the usual approaches to qualitative methods but the rise in interest in mixed methods. It also attends to theoretical and conceptual frameworks and rigour in mixed methods, topics students often struggle with. Over all the text is well presented, detailed.but accessible.

This book is easy to read and I have been a champion of mixed method research and have used this during my MPH & PhD in Glasgow University. Now I am in the Graduate Entry Medical School in Limerick University in Ireland and next week am going for the INMED conference in Dublin and my abstract has been accepted for oral presentation in the conference and the Title of my abstract & presentation is "An Evaluation of the GEMS Peer mentoring programme using Mixed Methods".
This book should be recommended for all schools that teach Public Health in the wider context as Social Determinants of Health where Public Health practitioners can use mixed methods in all their research as it gives life to the numbers and the research will be "Holistic".
I strongly recommend this book which enables students & public health practitioners to carry out evidence based mixed method research.
