Outdoor Provision in the Early Years

Edited by:

March 2011 | 136 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
Outdoor education offers children special contexts for play and exploration, real experiences, and contact with the natural world and the community. To help ensure young children thrive and develop in your care, this book provides essential information on how to make learning outdoors a rich and valuable part of their daily life.

Written by a team of experts in the field, this book focuses on the core values of effective outdoor provision, and is packed with ideas to try out in practice. Topics covered include:

- the role of play in learning outdoors

- meaningful experiences for children outdoors

- the role of the adult outdoors

- creating a dynamic and flexible outdoor environment

- dealing with challenge, risk and safety

- including every child in outdoor learning

There are case studies of successful strategies in action, covering the Birth to 5 age range. Outdoor provision needs to be thoughtfully planned, well organised and appropriately supported by adults, and this book will help practitioners and students to lead good practice with confidence, so that they respond to the needs and interests of young children.

An inspirational text, celebrating the joy of outdoor learning. The case studies offer opportunity for reflection. The book is accessible to students across a range of levels and I have recommended it to my students to enhance their own practice and to support the development of their colleagues.

Overall a good book that shows the importance of outdoor play within the early years. Is a book I will recommend the library and learner's at Tresham to consider buying.

This is a comprehensive guide to understanding and planning for outdoor provision in the early years. The format of the book enables it to be of value to a range of readers/practitioners from those already initiated into the benefts of this aspect of early years pedagogy needing some reminders of their original impetus and passions - to those who are novices and uncertain in this field. The black and white photographs, case studies and 'moving forward' features make the book very accessible and inspiring.

Super book and will become essential text for 90 first year undergraduates as incorporates many of the themes introduced. Excellent structure and reflection points; the case studies will make useful start to seminars after students have previously read the chapter.
